This shall include floor level, flatness and finish tolerances within minimum requirements specified herein. .2 The finish of concrete substrates to receive carpet tile shall be machine trowelled to a smooth surface that is free of all marks, imperfections, or conditions that will telegraph through or damage installed materials. Where this requirement is not provided the substrate surface shall be rectified by the Contractor before the work of this section proceeds. .3 The maximum variation of substrate surfaces to receive carpet tile flooring shall not exceed that indicated in NFCA Part A10 - Acceptable Conditions (and unless otherwise noted shall be level within 5 mm (3/16") in 3000 mm (120") in any direction). Where this minimum is exceeded the substrate surface shall be rectified by the Contractor before work of this section proceeds. SPEC NOTE: To ensure the above noted requirement is achieved the same statement must be included in the concrete specification. .4 The Contractor shall be responsible for the grinding or sanding of ridges, undulations, projections and areas of carbonation and scaling and for the filling and levelling of expansion joints, cracks, grooves and other irregularities. Where patching or levelling is required, the use of a Latex base filling compound is recommended. The surface of the floor shall be broom clean. .5 The Contractor shall ensure that all finished surfaces required to receive carpet tile are smooth, level, and structurally sound, and are clean, dry and free from alkali, dust, dirt, drywall filler, paint, varnish, solvents, oils and grease, waxes, release agents, sealers and curing and hardening compounds that are detrimental to installation requirements, i.e. incompatible with adhesive and carpet tile to be installed. The final condition, including the type and location, of each substrate shall be in complete accordance with NFCA requirements and the adhesive and carpet tile manufacturer’s installation recommendations. SPEC NOTE: if existing flooring removal is to be included in this specification ensure that adequate ventilation is provided during flooring and adhesive removal. .6 To adequately “condition” carpet tile and installation materials and to prevent potential expansion, contraction, adhesive bonding failure or other problems, ensure that the following conditions are adhered to prior to and immediately after installation. SPEC NOTE: Delete “.a” if building is occupied and temperature and humidity levels are constant. |
.a The temperature of areas to carpet tile shall be between minimum and maximum temperatures required by the manufacturer for at least 48 hours prior to, during and after installation. A minimum temperature of 130C (550F) thereafter shall be maintained to avoid concentrated or irregular heating at all times. Installation shall not be performed if the temperature in the areas scheduled to receive carpet tile is less than the minimum required.
.b All areas to receive carpet tile shall be provided with adequate illumination (minimum of 538 lux at floor level) in accordance with WCB requirements by others. |
.7 Carpet tile shall only be installed after finishing work, especially gypsum board and painting work, is completed, but before demountable partitions, telephone, and electrical pedestal outlets are installed. All areas to receive carpet tile shall be free of all other Trades until completed and in the case of glue-down installations, the adhesive shall have fully cured.
.8 DO NOT proceed with installation until all unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected. Notify the Contractor in writing of all defects likely to impair finished work. Start of work implies acceptance of surfaces and conditions. .9 Coordinate carpet tile installation with other trades in advance and make provisions for work of other trades to avoid future repairs. Refer to the requirements of adjacent flooring coverings where applicable. |

concrete for moisture using RMA referenced test method and provide written results.
Moisture emission shall not exceed [1 kg / 70 m2 (3 lb / 1000 ft2) in 24 hours
with maximum moisture content at time of installation not to exceed 2.5%]
[maximum allowable limits established by the carpet tile manufacturer].
.2 Test concrete for alkalinity and neutralize if required in accordance with NFPA recommendations without using acid. .3 Type, location, condition and surface tolerances of sub-floor, must be in complete accordance with NFCA requirements and carpet tile manufacturers recommendations. .4 Fill substrate low spots, cracks, joints and holes with substrate filler to the extent required by scope of work and ensure substrates are free from all bumps, ridges and other imperfections. Feather filler to allow for difference in adjacent floor materials as required. Rough grind to eliminate all irregularities and sweep and vacuum substrate clean. .5 Seal and prime substrate surfaces in accordance with carpet tile and adhesive manufacturer's recommendations. .6 Review all site conditions, installation requirements and timetable for work and ensure substrate, environmental conditions and work by other trades is acceptable prior to commencing installation of all materials and to ensure that schedule can be maintained. .7 Ensure that temperature requirements for installation of materials is within appropriate range prior to, during, and after installation. .8 Where applicable, remove existing carpet and dispose of in a legal manner or recycle in accordance with noted requirements. [After remedial work to subfloors is complete] ensure all such surfaces to receive carpet tile are vacuumed clean and are dry, smooth and free from substances detrimental to filler and adhesive bond (as noted herein). |
3.2 Installation of Adhesive:
|
.1 Review substrate and environmental conditions to ensure they are in accordance with adhesive manufacturer’s written requirements.
.2 Mix and apply adhesives in strict accordance with manufacturer's written instructions, observing recommended application techniques and spread rates, open times and safety precautions. .3 Apply adhesive to fully cover substrate using appropriate notched trowel. Use new trowels when existing trowels become worn. Self-adhesive carpet tile installation shall be in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations. |
