Preface:
1 • GENERAL
.01 Description:

Use the following only if the work is to be provided by the flooring contractor. Refer to Part A16 - Specification Guides for information. Note that such pricing is indicated using the Section number as an aid to listing such pricing in a numerical order on the Bid Form. Specifiers may choose an alternate method.

- Use this specification section when a specification is required to specify the removal of existing flooring.
- This Section number (02 42 10) including Section references noted under Related Work Specified Elsewhere is based on the MasterFormat 2004 numbering system. The use of Section 02270 / 02070 based on MasterFormat 1995 / 1988 numbering is no longer applicable.
- This specification is directed to the (General) Contractor (or Construction Manager). Where there is no General Contractor substitute the term Flooring Contractor.
- Review all requirements noted herein and carefully choose those that meet project requirements. The Specifier must choose one item from a series of items surrounded with [ .. ] brackets such as [Contractor] [Construction Manager] [Consultant] and delete the remainder. Items surrounded with ( .. ) brackets are additional information / comments that should be left in the specification.
- Adding or deleting items in this specification must be done with care and caution. The onus of doing so rests with the Specifier who must have a complete and thorough understanding of what is required. Where additional information must be added to this specification the Specifier must ensure that such information is not only accurate but also in accordance with NFCA requirements. Because of the above noted requirements NFCA strongly recommends that this specification be edited by a qualified specification writer. Refer to Part A16 - Specification Guides, 1.02.
- This specification is not set-up with auto-numbering. Any changes (additions or deletions) therefore means that the specifier will have to re-number / re-space following items to suit.
- Revise header and footer to suit project requirements. As a suggestion insert project name particulars on left side of header and consultant name on bottom left and issue date on bottom right of the footer.
- NOTE: If there is no other demolition work other than flooring removal this work may also be incorporated into flooring specifications.
1 • GENERAL
.01 Description:
SPEC NOTES:
- This article (1.1) is not intended to scope removal of existing flooring work but to serve as a general description. The onus of defining the extent of this section of Work remains with the Contractor, who will ensure that the area / scope of responsibility of any particular Subcontractor / supplier is set out in full detail when awarding the contract for this work. The extent of this section of Work is also governed by the limits of local trade agreements and conditions. This article should be used in conjunction with Related Work.
- This work shall be provided by the General Contractor or by the flooring contractor under a separate contract or separate price. Refer to Part A12 - Substrate Preparation, Part A13 - Patching and Filling, and Part A16 - Specification Guides for information.
Use the following only if the work is to be provided by the flooring contractor. Refer to Part A16 - Specification Guides for information. Note that such pricing is indicated using the Section number as an aid to listing such pricing in a numerical order on the Bid Form. Specifiers may choose an alternate method.

- Section Includes: All labour, materials, equipment, and services to removal of existing flooring at locations indicated on drawings and as specified herein.
- The work shall also include the following:
- removal of [resilient] [carpet] [hardwood] [laminate] flooring.
- salvage of existing flooring for reuse.
- recycling flooring materials.
- remedial cleaning of substrate surfaces.
- preparation of substrate surfaces to receive flooring.
- Provide Separate Prices for the following and note same on the Bid Form:
- Separate Price 024210-S1 for removal of existing [resilient] [hardwood] [laminate] flooring.
- Provide Unit Price for the following and note same on the Bid Form:
- Unit Price 024210-U1 for preparation of substrate surfaces by shot or bead blasting of substrate surfaces per [m²][ft²].
- This Section along with the drawings forms part of the Contract and is to be read, interpreted and coordinated with all other parts.
- Division 00 – Procurement and Contracting Requirements and Division 01 - General Requirements form an integral part of this Section of Work.
- Related Work Specified Elsewhere: shall include, but not necessarily be limited to, the following:
- Section 02 40 00 Demolition / Alterations (removal / disposal of existing structure)
Section 02 82 00 Facility Remediation (hazardous material removal)
Section 03 54 15 Cementitious Underlayment
.02 Reference Standards:
- The latest applicable edition of the Floor Covering Reference and Specification Manual issued by the National Floor Covering Association of Canada (NFCA) shall govern all materials and workmanship. Whenever reference is made within this specification to NFCA requirements it shall mean, as a minimum, those standards and requirements noted in the NFCA Reference and Specification Manual.
- The latest applicable edition of the following additional reference standards and codes shall also govern all materials and installation work specified herein as applicable:
- Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS).

- Review the site and promptly report to the [Contractor][Owner] any errors, inconsistencies or omissions discovered, and in particular the presence of asbestos-containing materials. If asbestos containing materials are discovered during flooring removal the work shall not proceed until direction from the [Contractor][Owner] has been received.
- Should there be asbestos-containing material present on site, either specifically stated in the Contract Documents or discovered during flooring removal work, its removal must be performed by a qualified asbestos abatement contractor. The scheduling of the work is the responsibility of the [Contractor][Owner]. All applicable regulations and guidelines in regard to removal must be strictly adhered to.
- Keep doors and windows open when weather permits, and operate ventilation fans at maximum capacity during flooring and adhesive removal.

3 • EXECUTION
.01 Relocation of Existing Furniture and Equipment:

Include this article when existing furniture and equipment is to be relocated by flooring installer to permit flooring removal.
.02 Removal of Existing Flooring and Adhesive:
SPEC NOTE:
Include this article when existing flooring including adhesive is to be removed by flooring installer and this work is not part of selective demolition by others.

Include this article if materials to removed are to be salvaged for reuse or recycled.

Include this article only where entire areas need to be re-surfaced by the flooring installer, using a self-levelling underlayment or panel underlayment. Unusually large deviations in concrete floors may require grinding or the use of concrete toppings. Where structure below is suspect remediation shall be done by Contractor. In either case involve the services of a professional engineer before proceeding.

Normally include either Article 3.5 or 3.6 only. Include both only to apply to different areas. Ensure that areas requiring different treatment are clearly identified on drawings or schedules.
.01 Relocation of Existing Furniture and Equipment:
SPEC NOTE:
Include this article when existing furniture and equipment is to be relocated by flooring installer to permit flooring removal.
- Relocate furniture and equipment [designated by [Contractor] [Owner] as required to permit removal of existing flooring. Store temporarily as directed by [Contractor] [Owner].
- Return furniture and equipment to original locations after removal of existing flooring and installation of new flooring.
- [Contractor] [Owner] will perform electrical disconnection and reconnection as required.
.02 Removal of Existing Flooring and Adhesive:

Include this article when existing flooring including adhesive is to be removed by flooring installer and this work is not part of selective demolition by others.

Specify item .4 above OR item .4 below as required.
- Refer to Division 1 for requirements pertaining to noise and dust control and use of premises.
- Vacuum existing flooring notably carpet [and cushion] thoroughly, prior to removal, using vacuum equipped with power head/sweeper.
- Apply fine mist water spray to carpet [and undercushion] as required to minimize dust generation during removal. Avoid spraying near electrical outlets.
- Remove existing flooring from areas indicated and legally dispose materials off site.
- Remove and salvage existing flooring for resuse. Salvaged materials shall remain property of the Owner. Size roll goods and plank materials to facilitate handling. Relocate salvaged materials [on site as directed by the Owner.
- Vacuum floor immediately after existing flooring has been removed.
- Remove existing flooring accessories [and wall base] from areas to receive new flooring materials.
- Remove loose and poorly adhered adhesive remaining on substrate. Remove trowel tracks and rough remaining adhesive using mechanical means.
- Retain [ insert items ] for re-installation as indicated.
.03 Salvage and Recyclable Materials:
SPEC NOTE:
Include this article if materials to removed are to be salvaged for reuse or recycled.
- Except where otherwise specified, all materials indicated or specified to be permanently removed from the Place of the Work shall become Contractor's property. Maximize to the fullest extent possible, salvage and recycling of such materials, consistent with proper economy and expeditious performance of the Work.
- To reduce the quantity of material otherwise destined for disposal at a landfill, the Contractor is encouraged to consider utilizing the services of businesses and non-profit organizations that specialize in salvage and recycling of used building materials, but does so at his own option and risk.
- A listing of recyclers specializing in specific categories of materials may be obtained from local or regional government.
.04 Condition of Substrates:
- Inspect substrate surfaces. Where applicable provide suitable measures to clean and dry surfaces. Use non vapour producing dry heat sources and ventilation fans.
- Ensure surfaces are reasonably level, smooth, and free of grease, wax, and other foreign matter.
.05 Substrate Remediation:
SPEC NOTE:
Include this article only where entire areas need to be re-surfaced by the flooring installer, using a self-levelling underlayment or panel underlayment. Unusually large deviations in concrete floors may require grinding or the use of concrete toppings. Where structure below is suspect remediation shall be done by Contractor. In either case involve the services of a professional engineer before proceeding.
- Prepare substrate to underlayment manufacturer's recommendations.
- Apply cementitious underlayment over entire areas [indicated on drawings] [to be carpeted].
- Apply to manufacturer's instructions. Add aggregate as recommended by manufacturer to extend thickness.
- Provide a substrate flat so that no object greater than 3 mm can pass under a 3 metre straight edge oriented in all directions at any location.
.06 Substrate Preparation:
SPEC NOTE:
Normally include either Article 3.5 or 3.6 only. Include both only to apply to different areas. Ensure that areas requiring different treatment are clearly identified on drawings or schedules.
- If recommended by adhesive or carpet manufacturer, provide cementitious underlayment as a barrier coating over the entire area to receive carpet.
- Vacuum substrate to remove dust and other small particles.
- Fill small holes, cracks, depressions and low spots with cementitious underlayment. Trowel and float to produce a smooth, flat surface. Allow to cure properly.
- When underlayment has cured, clean substrate surface and allow to dry.
- Test cementitious underlayment substrate for porosity, moisture content and alkalinity.
- Ensure substrate has an acceptable level of absorbency.
